Teleconference Ukraine-Germany “Transapical heart valve implantation” State Clinical Research Center Telemedicine assisted in holding a teleconference at the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery (Ukraine) with the Klinikum Augsburg, Academic Teaching Facility of the Ludwig-Maximilian-University Munich (Germany) on the November 24, 2009 Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Bayer, Chief physician of the Clinic for Heart and Thoracic Surgery in Klinikum Augsburg, and Dr. Frank Ortel, Executive senior physician, the operation was transmitted, where artificial heart valve was implanted. This procedure, known as transapical artificial heart valve implantation allows surgeons to implant a new valve to the patient instead of pathologically chaneed, while his heart continues to beat. Traditional open heart surgery is effective and is often used in valve replacement, but surgeons can’t use it for all patients, - says Dr. Oertel. - In this case, open-heart surgery was unacceptable for the 78-year-old patient. Minimally invasive approach in the field of valve implantation has not been used in the countries of CIS yet, but the experience exchange between leading German and Ukrainian experts in the sphere of cardiac surgery gives a good reason to believe that these high-level operations will soon save lives of hundreds Ukrainians that need valve implantation. |
